Carleton E. Watkins, The Three Brothers, 1878 – 1881. Property of Preus museum collection.
Carleton E. Watkins photographed the "newly discovered" West, and felt that his images helped to convince the US Congress to make Yosemite Valley into a National Park in 1864.
Watkins experimented with various photographic techniques, and adopted a "mammoth camera" with large glass plate negatives (18x22 inches / 45x56 cm). He also photographed a huge amount of stereo images. For carrying camera, chemicals, glass plates, a darkroom tent and various other equipment, he needed one cortege of a dozen mules.
Opening 24. mars at 12.
