Photo: Christian Stejskal

Christian Stejskal is a violin-player, photographer and storyteller with base in Cairo in Egypt. He comes to Preus museum with his multi meda show "My Neighbourhood" where we get to know the the "Zabaleen" - Cairo’s informal garbage collectors in the so called “Garbage City” in Cairo.

The multimedia performance "My Neighborhood" is the story about Christian Stejskal's pilgrimage on foot from Vienna in Austria where he is born, first to Jerusalem and then to Axum in Northern Ethiopia. On this journey he met the “Zabaleen”-Cairo’s informal garbage collectors in the so called "Garbage City" in Cairo. After finishing his walk in Axum he moved in to the "Garbage City" and lived with the "Zabaleen" while at the same time working as a violin-player at the Cairo Opera House. The last 5 years he has been photographing the garbage collectors as well as writing short stories about life in the “Garbage City”.

In the multimedia performance he takes the audience on a colorful and personal journey, first from Vienna to Axum, and then through his encounters with seven different people living in the "Garbage City", about their joys, their struggles, their tragedies, and their small triumphs in life. In telling his stories he uses narration, shows pictures on a screen, and he plays music which he has composed himself on the violin as well as some Arabic music (also on the violin). The whole performance lasts approximately 90 minutes, and is held in Norwegian.
