Week 7 - 2020
Rolling revolution
In 1888, the first commercial photography apparatus was introduced to the world. This camera was a rolling revolution in the history of photography, as it was the first camera to use roll film (in opposition to the leading glass plate). George Eastman, the founder of Kodak, made sure that this fantastic invention became a part of our collective cultural heritage. The camera changed how we saw the world. Today we practically can’t remember anything, unless it was photographed first.
Kodak promoted photography as the healthy hobby. It brought you out the door, <<yet causes no trouble or fatigue>>. Whether photography keeps you out of trouble might only be truthful in part. However, its position as a leisure activity passionately pursued and endorsed by many is certain!
In this short film you can take a look at this special camera from 1888. And of course, you can also find this camera in our exhibition «A history of photography».
