Vinterdrømmer?

Unknown photographer, Molly Lamont, Photographs for cigarette cases, 1940s. Preus Museum Collection

Vinterdrømmer?

Many enjoy the winter holidays, but surely we can allow ourselves to dream of summer? The Preus museum collection is diverse, where we can also find hundreds of small photographs of dazzling movie stars, musicians and showgirls. They were originally made as collectable photos bought in cigarette packets from the 1940s.

The act of smoking and the movie industry used to go hand in hand, as Stars of Hollywood were paid thousands of dollars for smoking in films. The british company Carreras Tobacco Company sold cigarette packages along with these small collectable pin-up photographs; perfectly fitted for an album sold by your nearest tobacco tradesman «for one penny».

In this photo you see actress Molly Lamont on a trip to the beach, wearing a swimsuit and a parasol in hand. However, by further examination we can see that the photo is taken in a studio. Thus, it might as well have been photographed in February, when dreams of summer is at its most intense. Do you wanna see moore of these photographs? Visit us at Flickr
